As I said, a few weeks ago, the play-off places in this year’s McCoys Premier League were not going to be decided until Round 14 – and after some titanic battles in Birmingham in Round 13 that is certainly the case.
With only Phil Taylor and Simon Whitlock assured of their places, the results in Birmingham mean that five players are still in contention for the last remaining places! Reigning champion Gary Anderson, with his drawn match against Barney, can no longer make it.
Adrian Lewis, despite his heavy defeat and lack-lustre performance against the ever-improving Kevin Painter, can still make the play-offs with a win in Newcastle over Simon Whitlock.
James Wade must re-focus after his 1-8 defeat to Mr T. The future lies in his own hands because he can secure the coveted place by defeating Barney in Newcastle. However a win for Barney means the Dutchman will claim the spot. All of them have their continuation in the tournament in their own hands.
This is not the case with both Kevin Painter and Andy Hamilton. They both played superbly in Birmingham to keep their prospects alive. Essentially, not only must one of them win their head-to-head but, even then, their fate will rest on the results of other matches.
What a night in prospect!
